Thar Be Elves: Chapter Three
As I walked through the double doors the entire room went silent. I was the focus of every eye. Kethan and Tol'an came forward to take my hands and drew me into the assembled group. I'd met elves and brownies and every kind of creature that ever existed in a fairy tale (with a few obvious exclusions dragons won't fit in the castle). I was informed that the creatures or beings not present would be sending representatives in the near future. I smiled 'til my face hurt and was beginning to think that it would never end, when Kethan made our goodbyes and whisked the three of us out of the celebration and up the stairs to my chamber (it was much to grand to be called a mere bedroom).

The doors closed behind us and an uneasy silence enveloped the three of us. It was broken when Kethan took a deep breath and stepped forward to take my hand.

“Erin, I know you have a lot of questions and we “ he indicated himself and Tol'an “will answer every one of them. However, I believe that we would be more comfortable in your sitting room.”

I exhaled releasing the breath I wasn't even aware I was holding.

Kethan silently escorted me to a large, overstuffed, white sofa. Taking the seat to my right while Tol'an took the one to my left and still holding my hand. Kethan leaned forward and began to explain.

“At one time our two worlds were not so separate as they are now, in fact I believe they weren't separated at all. I cannot prove it, as even the dragons, the longest lived of us all, have no memory of it, nor any records that are that old. What they do have is a racial memory of having no restrictions on their flying.”

“Today that is not the case at all there exists a barrier that has grown stronger over tens of thousands of years. Many people of all races have devoted their lives to studying it and has been discovered is that it has become stable and seems to be permanent and that in some places there is a thinning of this barrier. In these places a particular type of person can bridge this barrier and allow the two worlds to connect. We call this person a Gate Keeper.”

Kethan spoke again, “I have given you just the bare outline of how our world and yours intersect and I know you must have many questions. However, if you could listen just a bit longer before asking them I would appreciate it.”

I nodded, silently giving my agreement.

“No one has ever been able to predict where or when a Gate Keeper will appear. The talent will seem to run in families for a while then vanish from the bloodline never to reappear, but most often seems to be a random incidence. Gate Keepers have been of every species and clan and seem to be getting more and more rare with each generation. We had almost given up hope of ever being able to cross over to your world because you are the first Gate Keeper born in over a thousand years.”
Kethan continued, “When the last Gate keeper died over six hundred of your years ago and no new Gate Keeper was born on our side and no gate was opened from your side of the barrier it was thought that the two worlds had been permanently severed.
Kethan continued, “When the last Gate keeper died over six hundred of your years ago and no new Gate Keeper was born on our side and no gate was opened from your side of the barrier it was thought that the two worlds had been permanently severed.
With your arrival that lost hope has been rekindled. Our people will celebrate for months knowing that not only has access to your world been restored but that the hope that the civil war that would follow mine and Tol'an's deaths may be averted.

     I blurted out. “Civil War?”

“Yes.” Kethan answered. “It may take a long time for me  and Tol'an, but we are not immortal. We will die eventually and until now without a catalyst and mate no chance for an heir to the throne civil war was inevitable. The peace that has held for over three thousand years would shattered and the differing sides would start a war that might never end.
